High Index Lens Material
The high index wars have begun. Within the last few years, we've seen the selection of high index lenses expand from 1.60 to 1.67 to 1.70 and now the latest, 1.74. This impact resistant design has become a popular choice because of it is light weight, thin, plus it provides UV protection.
Advantages
- Thin and lightweight appearance an excellent choice with many frame designs
- Absorbs 100% UVA/UVB
- 1.60 lenses are excellent for drilled rimless frames
- Plus lenses are flatter to reduce the "bug eye" effect
- Many high index lenses come systematic with a superior scratch resistant AR coating
Disadvantages
- Costs more than other materials, and may prevent the patient from adding an AR coating or selecting a second pair of prescription sunwear
- 1.74 not recommended for drilled rimless frames
